SILVER SPRING, Md.– Shoppers flocked to the streets of Silver Spring Saturday morning to purchase fresh and locally-sourced produce.
Among the other items available for sale were flowers, farm-raised meat, milk, eggs, bread and homemade products.
The moderate temperature and open-air stands provided for a peaceful and enjoyable shopping experience. A small band played pleasant music in the background.
“It’s fun,” said Kara, a shopper. “You get to see lots of different people, get some food. It’s just a nice activity.”
Other patrons come to the market to get fresh ingredients to cook with.
“I come to the farmer’s market to get whatever is seasonal,” said Dave.
Over 1,000 people had visited the market by 11 a.m. that morning, with more expected to come.
The market is organized by FRESHFARM, a non-profit that promotes sustainable agriculture in the Mid-Atlantic region.
It takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is located on Ellsworth Drive between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue. A public garage near the market can be accessed by both Georgia and Wayne avenues. There is free parking on Saturdays.
