Dear Sophie,

I’m so stressed out for this summer! I know that sounds weird, but I was so busy in the spring that I didn’t apply to any jobs or internships. I’m going into my senior year of high school in the fall, and I’m worried that not doing anything over the summer will mess up my college applications. The deadlines for jobs and internships all passed, and now my friends are doing cool stuff while I’m just sitting on my butt watching TV. They keep talking about their plans and goals and pressuring me to find something to do.

On the other hand though, I like having summer to simply relax. If I had to work every day I think I would go insane!!! I need me some pool and beach time.

Save me Sophie! I have no idea how to balance doing too much and doing too little.

From what I have read, you could really use a summer to just relax. As you said, you would probably go insane working every day, and that’s okay. Heck I go insane writing all this advice sometimes!

You’re probably already swamped with summer homework and you have a big year coming up. Take this time to relax and mentally prepare yourself for the school year. If vegging out in front of the TV benefits you, do it! If you feel like being a bit more productive, sign up for a fun class or go out and do something. Some ideas could be hiking, trying yoga, or taking a painting class.

It sounds like you only feel the need to apply to all these internships and jobs because of pressure coming from other people. Remember, your mental health should always come first. Think about what will benefit you the most, not what other people want.
